At Bridgeway Christian Academy, literature is an important component of our educational strategy. Our objectives include teaching our students to think critically, to develop discernment, and to enhance and build on the educational curriculum while encouraging appreciation of our literary heritage.
Our selection of literature will reflect our adherence to God as the ultimate source of all truth and to the Bible as the infallible standard against which every area of the life of the school is to be measured.
The criteria for materials selection will include the following:
- Curriculum support.
- Historical or technical information accuracy.
- Appropriateness in regard to age and maturity of the student.
- Encouragement of critical thought and discussion.
- Generally high quality of writing by a noted, skilled author.
Some materials, especially those dealing with the secular view of the earth’s creation, may have terminology or statements that we as Christians find objectionable. We don’t feel that these statements constitute a reason to banish an entire book from the media center. Rather, we hope that these few occurrences may spark meaningful teaching moments between parent and child, or teacher and students. Our goal is for our students to be aware of the world’s view on controversial issues, and be prepared to discuss them, rather than be sheltered from them.
If there are questions regarding a particular selection, the parent may fill out a Reconsideration Request form online, print it out, and turn it in to the media center. The concerns will be reviewed objectively, unemotionally, and as an important routine action. After reviewing the request, the parent will be notified of the decision and/or action by media center personnel.
If the resulting action is not acceptable to the parent, the matter will be brought before the age-appropriate administrator. The administrator will make a final decision.
