Reading Counts FAQs

What is BCA’s goal with the Reading Counts program?
BCA’s goal is to develop a love of reading in our students, and to introduce them to books that they might not otherwise read. We included many classic, biographical, historical fiction, and award winning books on this program. This program is also designed to improve reading comprehension skills, since the students have to answer questions about each book they read in order to earn points.

How is the program funded?
The Reading Counts program is funded by BCA’s Parent Teacher Fellowship Organization (PTF), the Book Fair, and by BCA. The PTF gives funding to the program for prizes for the Reading Counts Store, for special awards to classes throughout the year, and for the year-end ribbons and trophies. Books and quizzes for the program are purchased by proceeds from the annual Book Fair, and through use of some of the media center’s annual budget.

Is participation in the program mandatory?
No. It is a completely voluntary program. Most teachers encourage their students to participate in the program with rewards above and beyond the rewards they receive through the program.

How do students know which books to read?
The books in our school media center that are on the program will have special labels to let the students know that they are on the Reading Counts program. These labels also tell them the Lexile level, and how many points they will earn by reading the book.

How many tests can a student take each week?
Students may take as many tests as they are motivated to take. They may check out two reading counts books from the media center at a time. Also, they may read additional books on the program from the local library, bookstore, or home library.

What opportunities do the students have to take tests?
All classes in grades 1-5 have a student computer in their classroom. Upper School students have access to the program on the laptops. All students have the opportunity to take tests from 7:35 – 7:55 every Mon, Wed, Thurs, and Fri. morning in the computer lab.  Students also have the opportunity to take quizzes during their weekly media center class.

Are there any opportunities for parents to get involved with the program?
Yes! Please see the Volunteer Page for more information.
